Cumbungi (Wiradjuri for bullrushes)

Artist: Dale Rushforth

This piece is made for discarded iron sourced from local abandoned mining settlements in the Broken Hill area. The word Cumbungi comes from the Wiradjuri language meaning Bullrushes. I was inspired to make the artwork by my great grandfather, who for a period of time was employed as a Cumbungi Cutter, clearing the Bullrushes from various waterways and preventing the streams and rivers from becoming choked with this invasive plant.

Region: Broken Hill
